When to choose Endress+Hauser

When you need a single instrumentation vendor across multiple technologies with first-class CIP/SIP and 3-A / EHEDG hygienic credentials (pharma, food & beverage, life sciences), when you are sizing for hydrogen or low-density gases (Promass Q / X), or when ATEX / IECEx / SIL 3 coverage across the full product range is mandatory.

Endress+Hauser at a glance

Endress+Hauser is the most technology-balanced flow vendor in the market. Where Emerson skews to Coriolis through Micro Motion, E+H ships premium meters in every primary flow technology, and is alone among the majors in operating its own Coriolis, magmeter and ultrasonic production lines at scale.

Four characteristics drive most selections:

  • Hygienic credentials — EHEDG, 3-A, FDA, ASME BPE wetted materials and dual-compartment housings are standard, not options.
  • Hydrogen / low-density gas leadership — the Promass Q and Promass X have the lowest published zero-stability of any production Coriolis, which matters for hydrogen mass measurement and refuelling.
  • HistoROM device memory — every transmitter ships with a removable HistoROM module: instant device replacement without re-parameterisation, a real plus for spare-parts logistics.
  • Verification without removal — Heartbeat Technology runs SIL-traceable in-situ verification without breaking process containment.

Coriolis — Promass

The Promass family is the broadest single-vendor Coriolis range:

  • Promass F — the workhorse. Twin-tube, balanced sensor, ±0.05% of rate liquid mass, ±0.25% of rate gas mass. The benchmark for general process Coriolis.
  • Promass Q — quad-tube architecture, lowest zero-stability in the catalogue, the go-to for hydrogen refuelling, R744 CO₂ trading and entrained-gas hydrocarbons.
  • Promass X — large-line custody transfer (DN150 / 6" through DN400 / 16"), API MPMS / OIML certified.
  • Promass A / I / S — small-line, low-flow and hygienic Tri-Clamp variants.
  • Promass O — high-pressure (up to 414 bar) for upstream chemical injection and hydraulic fracturing services.

Electromagnetic — Promag

The Promag family is similarly deep:

  • Promag H — hygienic with full ASME BPE / 3-A coverage, PEEK or PFA liner. Standard in pharma and biotech.
  • Promag P — process duty, PTFE or PFA liner, the default for chemical service.
  • Promag W — water and wastewater workhorse, MID R49 / OIML R49 custody approved.
  • Promag L — large-line water with hard-rubber liner, the cost-effective choice for trunk-main duty.
  • Promag D — wafer-style, short installation envelope for retrofits.

Vortex, ultrasonic and thermal

  • Prowirl F / R 200 / 300 — vortex with optional integrated multivariable mass / steam compensation; well-rated for saturated and superheated steam at moderate Reynolds.
  • Prosonic Flow E / G / W / B — inline ultrasonic for liquids and gas; the Prosonic Flow 90 / 93 clamp-on for retrofit on water and most hydrocarbons.
  • t-mass T / F / 65 / 6700 — thermal mass for compressed air, biogas, natural gas, nitrogen; the most accurate published thermal mass on biogas.

Why InstruSelect promotes Endress+Hauser

The selector recommends Endress+Hauser strongly when:

  • The application is hygienic (pharma, biopharm, dairy, brewery) — Promass H, Promag H and the t-mass T are difficult to beat.
  • The application is hydrogen, CO₂ or natural gas with entrained moisture / dropout — Promass Q is the single most-cited meter in the public hydrogen-refuelling literature.
  • You want SIL 3 with TÜV-certified Heartbeat verification across multiple technologies from one vendor.

For non-hygienic, pure water utility revenue metering, Krohne Waterflux and Badger Meter M-Series may price out lower; for very high-volume custody hydrocarbon transfer Emerson Daniel ultrasonic competes. The selector ranks all three when the application supports it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Promass F, Q and X?

Promass F is the workhorse twin-tube Coriolis (±0.05% of rate liquid). Promass Q uses a four-tube balanced architecture with substantially lower zero-stability — it is the typical recommendation for hydrogen, CO₂, light hydrocarbons and any duty with possible entrained gas. Promass X is the large-line custody-transfer variant covering DN150–DN400.

Is Heartbeat Technology a real metrological verification?

Yes — it is TÜV-certified to SIL 2 / 3 and gives a verification report you can ship to your regulator without breaking process containment or removing the meter for a wet calibration. It does NOT replace a periodic wet calibration for custody-transfer duty, but it dramatically lengthens recalibration intervals on non-custody process meters.

Does Endress+Hauser make a clamp-on ultrasonic?

Yes — the Prosonic Flow 90 and 93 are external strap-on transducers for liquids and gas. For high-accuracy custody-grade ultrasonic the Prosonic Flow B 200 (biogas) or G 300 (natural gas) inline meters are the typical recommendation.

Why is Promass quoted as best-in-class for hydrogen?

Hydrogen has very low density, so a Coriolis meter's zero-stability and zero-stability-to-flow ratio dominate measurement error at low mass flows typical of hydrogen refuelling. The Promass Q's four-tube symmetric architecture publishes the lowest zero-stability across the major Coriolis OEMs, which is why it appears in most public hydrogen-station OEM specifications.
